Parent-administered pediatric blood collection at home: the RedDrop ONE study

Parents successfully collected clinically meaningful blood samples from children aged 3–17 at home with RedDrop ONE, with low reported pain, a 94% first-attempt success rate, and strong agreement between arm and leg results after overnight shipping to a CLIA laboratory.

Frequent blood testing is still tied to clinics and laboratories, which is a real burden for children with chronic or complex conditions and their families. This webinar presents an IRB-approved usability study of RedDrop ONE, an FDA-cleared capillary device, used by parents at home. The workflow depended on remote enrollment and electronic consent, a parent portal for instructions and surveys, direct-to-home kit fulfillment, unique-identifier sample tracking, and overnight shipping to a CLIA laboratory. Fifty children aged 3–17 in 19 U.S. states completed arm and leg collections. We will cover volume, pain, first-attempt success, arm–leg concordance, and the infrastructure that made the study operable.

What you will learn

  • How a fully remote study workflow enrolled families, delivered consent, and guided parents through collection without a clinic visit
  • How kits, instructions, unique-identifier labels, and overnight shipping connected the home collection to a CLIA laboratory
  • How parents used RedDrop ONE on the arm and leg, including first-attempt success, collection time, and the few cases that needed a second try
  • What parents and children reported on pain, confidence, and comparison with finger-prick and venous draws
  • How arm and leg lipid results agreed, and how parent-reported tube fill tracked laboratory-measured volume
